Using AI to Generate Search Schemas at Scale

Search schemas assist search engines in understanding your content in a more structured manner and can be super helpful for improving your click-through rates and indirectly, your rankings.

However, manually creating schema markup can be time-consuming and prone to errors. This is where artificial intelligence (AI), LLMs in particular, come into play. In this article, we'll explore the benefits of using AI for schema generation, discuss common schema types, and provide best practices for implementation. Additionally, we'll walk you through how we built the "Generate Page Schema" app, giving you insights into the process of creating an AI-powered tool for SEO optimization.

What is Schema Markup?

Schema markup is a form of microdata that creates enhanced descriptions, known as rich snippets, which appear in search results. This structured data helps search engines understand the context of information on web pages, leading to more insightful search results for users - Influencer Marketing Hub. By implementing schema markup, websites can provide search engines with additional context about their content, potentially improving their visibility in search engine results pages (SERPs).

Benefits of Using Schema Markup

The advantages of implementing schema markup are numerous:

  1. Improved search visibility
  2. Enhanced user experience through rich snippets
  3. Increased click-through rates
  4. Better understanding of content by search engines
  5. Potential for voice search optimization

These benefits make schema markup an essential component of any comprehensive SEO strategy.

Benefits of Using AI for Schema Generation

One of the most significant advantages of using AI for schema generation is the dramatic increase in efficiency and reduction in human error. AI can automate the generation of schema markup, significantly reducing the time involved and ensuring consistent application of best practices. This automation allows SEO professionals to focus on strategy and analysis rather than getting bogged down in the technical details of markup creation.

Common Schema Types

Understanding the different types of schema markup is crucial for effective implementation. Here are some of the most commonly used schema types:

Article Schema

Used for blog posts, news articles, and other written content, Article schema helps search engines understand the structure and content of your articles.

Product Schema

Essential for e-commerce sites, Product schema includes details like price, reviews, and availability, enhancing the visibility of product listings in search results - TechBullion.

Local Business Schema

Local Business schema is crucial for businesses with physical locations, providing search engines with important information like address, phone number, and service areas.

Other Schema Types

Other important schema types include:

  • Event schema for upcoming events
  • FAQ schema for frequently asked questions
  • Service schema for businesses offering services

Choosing the Right Schema Type

Selecting the appropriate schema type involves understanding the content of your page. Consider whether it's a branch page (like a category page) or a leaf page (like a product detail page). Match the schema type to the specific content to ensure accurate representation in SERPs - Influencer Marketing Hub.

Many websites have seen significant improvements in their SEO performance after implementing schema markup. For instance, an e-commerce site might see a boost in product visibility and click-through rates after implementing Product schema, while a local business could experience increased foot traffic after using Local Business schema.

Building the "Generate Page Schema" App

To demonstrate the power of AI in schema generation, we've created the "Generate Page Schema" app using Moonlit Platform. This app identifies and writes schema markup for any URL, featuring insights from SEO Consultant Joe Cowman. Here's a walkthrough of how we built it:

Step 1: Setting Up the Input

First, we'll set up a text input to receive the URL of the page for which we want to generate schema markup.

Step 2: Scraping the Webpage Content

We use a scraping function to fetch the raw text or HTML from the provided URL. For the output format, we chose 'Main Text' this will fetch the main page contents, ignoring irrelevant text found in navigation menus, footers or headers.

Step 3: Inferring the Schema Type

A chat model analyzes the content and determines the most suitable schema type.

Step 4: Writing the Schema Markup

Another chat model generates the schema markup in JSON format. For that we use the GPT-4o series because they support forcing valid JSON as a response type, so we can reliably get a schema that works.

Bulk Runs

This tool along with many other on the Moonlit Platform, can be ran at scale, for 1000s of inputs at once. So you can import a table containing all your website URLs and have the schemas generated for all of them in a click. To learn more about this feature, check out this video guide here.
